Frequently asked questions

How does Mission Zero Emissions work?

Mission Zero is an engaging, unique and powerful learning experience for students and teachers. Mission Zero Emissions is specifically focused on what the world would be like if there were no emissions.
There are three main components to Mission Zero Emissions (a.k.a. Mission Z):
Mission Zero utilizes "Future Cards" that describe a possible future, which include a) type of future, b) an object, person or thing, c) a paradox, a situation associated with the problem of emissions. Then each student, working individually or in small groups, draws the future, makes the object related to that future from recycled materials and solves the paradox (problem). Each students' future, object and situation is different. Focus is on building skills: imagination, creativity, confidence.
Mission Zero
also includes "brain warm-up" activities in the form of "riddles"  to work with. Each team must present their solution to the riddle. Focus is on building skills: teamwork, ethics, decision making and critical thinking.
All Missions include Curriculum, Training and the SmarterWorld Café.

What is included in Mission Zero?

There are three main components to Mission Z--Curriculum, Training and SmarterWorld Café.
Curriculum: Mission Z3 includes a series of riddles for you to give to your students. Details about the riddles are included in the Mission Z3 course, which you'll have access to once you sign-up. Also, there is a robust Resources section for you to learn more about emissions to share with your students.
In addition to Mission Z3 you'll get access to the original Mission ZScenario Cards and Mission Z2 Future Thing Game. Both are exceptional learning experiences and give you even more content to share with your students throughout the school year.
Training:
There are several training options for you. You can attend one of the live trainings delivered online via Zoom. These trainings are schedule every two-three weeks during the school year. Additionally, trainings are available online, on-demand so you can get the information you need anytime, anywhere. From time-to-time we offer in-person trainings at school sites.
SmarterWorld Café:
You'll get access to the SmarterWorld Café, a popular online Podcast (live and on-demand) that includes interviews with industry experts, VIPs and young innovators that will inspire your students to imagine the future.

Are supplies or materials needed?

You can certainly add a little spice to the project by being creative with how you present Mission Z3 to your students. That said, the third installment of Mission Z -- Mission Z3 -- is a "thinking project" and does not require materials or supplies.

What training is included?

There are FREE trainings available to you. Mission Z3 is pretty easy to understand so only minimal training is needed. That said, trainings are provided virtually (live and on-demand), as well as in-person sessions scheduled by school sites. Each Mission Z course includes a TLC (Tutorial Live Chat) for you to book a 30-minute training directly with Mission Z staff, online for one-on-one support.

What age or grade is this designed for?

Elementary, Middle School and High students. Although we do not go by "grades" per se, we prefer "Levels" which provides for an entry point into the challenge based on the students skills rather than age or grade. Mission Z has been designed to match the learning level of students from Lower Elementary, Upper Elemenary, Middle School and High School.

How long does this project take to implement?

Mission Z can take as little as an hour or can be implemented over a period of days. The time the project takes depends on how much time you want to give your students to investigate a Zero Emissions Future.

What are the other Mission Zero projects?

Mission Zero offers a suite of STEAM challenges based on real-world problems which includes Mission ZZero Emissions Future, Mission Zero Emissions projects are FREE and has been generously funded by Electrify America.
