You Can't Ban the Future

New York City has announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for children through eighth grade. NYPost.

I understand the concern. We don't want children handing their thinking over to machines. We want them curious. Creative. Wrestling with difficult questions. Thinking for themselves.

I'm just not convinced the way to accomplish that is by removing the technology they're going to grow up beside.

AI isn't waiting outside the schoolhouse for permission to enter the future. It's already here.

Maybe the concern isn't whether children should use AI. Maybe the question is how we help them learn to think with AI—without surrendering the thinking that makes them human.

The tools can think.
Good.

What does that make possible for our kids?

Stay curious.
