I’m not going to argue about whether Michigan should have been given that final second. There are plenty of people doing that already.
I'm interested in what happened after it though.
Western Michigan lost on a Hail Mary with that one second on the clock. Brutal.
But afterward, their coach saw something else. His players had just been handed a moment of adversity they never asked for. Something had gone against them. They couldn't change it. They couldn't undo it. Some might say the way it ended ‘surprised them,’ to say the least.
What to do next, that’s the decision that mattered.
This an extraordinary lesson for a young person.
We spend a lot of time trying to prepare kids so things will go right. I'm increasingly interested in what happens when they don't.
Because life will eventually hand every kid a moment they didn't expect, didn't want and couldn't control. A surprise. Okay. So, now what?
That's one of the ideas behind Mission Zero. We give children safe opportunities to encounter the unexpected, make decisions, adapt and keep going.
Not because we know what will happen next. But, because we don’t.
